Mahabharata war - Day 1

Episode#55

The First Day of the battle reverberated with the cumulative sounds of kettledrums, trumpets, horns and conch that made sky ring their clamour. Horses neighed, elephants charged as they trumpeted loud and the warriors shouted their "lion roars" Arrows flew in the air like burning meteors.

Father and sons, uncles and nephews slew one another - oblivious of their age old affection and blood-ties. It was heinous and horrendous form that very well defined a terrible blood soaked carnage - nothing less than it...!

By forenoon, the Pandavas army was badly shaken up, Bhisma chariot created great havoc and destruction wherever it went, Abhimanyu unable to withstand this and attacked Bhisma Pitamah when the oldest and the youngest warrior stood face to face, the gods came in to witness the combat.

On other hand, Bhima, Virata and his son Uttar, Dhrishtadyumna the son of Drupada crowded in collectively to save the young boy by distracting Bhisma Pitamah attention from him to them.

Thousands of soldiers perished, numerous chariots dismembered and countless horses and elephants killed forming a mountain pile of flesh and blood.

The Pandavas forces suffered greatly on the first day of the battle that seized Yudhishtira with apprehension while Duryodhana joy was boundless.

At the end of the day, when soldiers withdrew to their battle camps, the earth had taken a horrendous form the rivers of crimson blood flowing through of strewn heads, dismembered chariots, torn banners and fragments of huge weapons.

In Hastinapur Palace, Laxmana Kumar on entering his sister's chamber found her standing near the window sadly watched the full moon; he felt melancholy and realized that she had grown very quiet after the swayamwara episode, he felt she had suddenly lost her childhood and had turned into a mature woman.

She came in and sat with her brother, after a pause, Laxmana Kumar said "You know father wants me to fight the war and insisted to kill Abhimanyu." She suddenly burst into laughter and Laxmana felt relieved to see her laughing. She said "Father must be joking you cannot kill even a single soldier... Forget about Abhimanyu ha ha ha...!"

Laxmana replied "That exactly what I said to father but he said that it is the duty of every Kshatriya to kill our enemy and win." Laxmani, with tears in her eyes said "Abhimanyu is not our enemy; he is my first love, it was my bad luck that he was not invited in the Swayamwara or else I would have selected him as my husband."

Kumar knew she was in love with Abhimanyu and asked out of his curiosity "Did you tell Abhimanyu about your love?" Laxmani shook her head and cried. He sat there still she recovered and then left.
