Mahabharata war - Day 6

Episode#60

The sixth day was hall-marked by a phenomenal slaughter, Drona charioteer was killed, Drona took hold of rein and - what followed would be indescribable in words...! Drona went about like fire flashing through the bales of cotton. Both the armies were soon disintegrated; violence continued in leaps and bounds, blood flowed in torrents and the field was covered by debris comprising of dead soldiers, elephants, horses and broken chariots.

Bhima planned to seek and kill all Duryodhana brothers; they in turn, attacked him from all sides. They were Dusshasana, Durvishaha, Durmata, Jaya, Jayatsena, Vikarna, Chitrasena, Sudarsana, Charuchitra, Suvarma, Dushkarna and others. Their desire was dwarfish, they desired to take him as a prisoner while Bhima's desire was a huge as his physique, it was to kill them all on the spot.

Bhima suddenly jumped down from his chariot and charged like a racing bull, mace in hand, and made straight for the sons of Dhritarashtra.

When Dhrishtadyumna saw Bhima's chariot disappear in enemies lines, he was alarmed and rush to the spot but finding only his empty chariot, he asked the charioteer with tearful eyes "Vishoka, where is Bhima, precious to me than life?" Vishoka bowed and said, "Bhima asked me to stay here and rushed forward with mace in his hand straight into enemies ranks." Fearing that Bhima would be overpowered, Dhrishtadyumna drove his chariot into the enemy's line and discovered that he was surrounded on all sides by enemies fighting from their chariots. Bhima stood alone against them all, mace in his hand, bleeding all over and breathing fire like an enraged dragon and Dhrishtadyumna lovingly embraced him, helped him to settle into his chariot and picked out the shafts that had pierced his body at various points.

The sun was rapidly sinking, a fierce battle continued for an hour, when thousands perished and finally the day's battle ceased. Yudhishtira was happy to see Dhrishtadyumna and Bhima return to the camp in one piece.

The tale was composed by his guru Sage Vyasa and written by Lord Ganesha. He questioned sage Vaisampayana, at the end "I am confused " said Janamejaya "who is the hero of this tale? And who is the villain?" "Who shall we call villain? Duryodhana who refused to share even a small piece of land? Yudhishtira, who gambled away his wife and kingdom? Bhisma, who prevented Dhritarashtra from becoming the king because he was blind,  Shantanu, who sacrificed his son's future to satisfy his own lust? Or is it Gandhari, for blindfolding herself to her son's misdeeds and faults? Or maybe Lord Krishna, who had long ago promised the Earth-goddess to rid the world of unrighteous kings? You decide who is hero and who is villain" said Vaisampayana.  ++
