The scars on their hands made Jarasandha suspicious which were the marks of bowstring - suggestive that they were Kshatriyas?

At midnight, a restless Jarasandha went to meet them and demanded the truth; Bhima replied "we are your enemies and we seek instant combat, you may choose to fight with all three or one by one in succession" having understood their real identities, Jarasandha replied "Krishna, you are not a Kshatriya but a cowherd and Arjuna you are still very young, so I would choose to fight with Bhima as he is renowned icon of muscle strength." Both agreed to fight without weapons.

Both were equal in strength and they battled inconclusively for 13 long days, Arjuna and Krishna watched them with hopeful anxiety and finally on 14th day Jarasandha was exhausted, Bhima lifted him effortlessly, whirled him around and banged him on the earth, he seized his legs and tore them apart in two halves - Bhima roared in exultation but immediately the two halves joined and Jarasandha revived again and viciously attacked Bhima.
