Duryodhana enters battlefield of Kurukshetra...

Episode#45

The air was rich with the pungent odour of horses and elephant dungs, vultures flew over the Kurukshetra battlefield that reeked of war, death and devastation.

When Duryodhana entered the battlefield in his chariot, his army received him with great cheer, filled with renewed enthusiasm; he surveyed the battlefield as far as his eyes could take him, the massive ocean of warriors stood spread-eagle on both the sides. He felt he was at the top of the world and with an air of victory when he twanged his bowstring, his army roared and responded jubilantly, Duryodhana was dazed with their abundant mirth and waved his hand with gratitude.

He looked at the dedicated and extremely devoted masses of his people who were ready to lay their lives on the battlefield for their dear king. Looking at them, he felt a twinge of guilt gnawing at his heart - was he misusing their loyalty by sending them as sacrificial goats on the battlefield? He would win the kingdom - but what would they gain by leaving their wives and children, reducing them to the state of helplessness in the form of widows and orphans? But did he have the choice? He stood nonplussed right in the middle of the Kurukshetra battlefield, numerous questions cropped in his mind for which he had no answer!

He had several doubts that attended on his psyche. Exactly who was sided up with him and who did not - the curtain of confusion always left him bewildered! He could not vouch entirely on Bhisma Pitamah who forwarded a clause that he will not kill any of the Pandavas which planted the seed of doubt in his mind! The second doubt sprang from Bhisma Pitamah surprisingly stands that Karna would not participate in the war, was this Bhisma Pitamah pre-planned plot to defeat Kauravas?

The next in Duryodhana firing line of doubt was Drona whose condition prior to the war was that he would only capture Pandavas but not kill them! Was this because Arjuna was his favorite or he liked the Pandavas more than Kauravas? He also had doubts about king Shalya uncle of Nakula and Sahdeva who being an ardent supporter of Pandavas yet reluctantly joined the army of Kauravas.

Likewise, Duryodhana was neither confident about Kripa nor Gandhar Naresh Sakuni nor his brother-in-law Jayadratha, Kritavarma who was commander-in-cheif of Vasudev Krishna famous Narayani Sena. The only singular person he could fully trust in the entire army was Aswasthama, son of Drona and also his own brothers. He desperately wished Karna - his sole Trump card was beside him! To his dismay, it suddenly dawned on to Duryodhana that he was surrounded perhaps by half-hearted, disinclined warriors, the war appeared to him unconquerable and unattainable - but it was too late now.
